Large purple flowers surround the tall, upright spike with the terminal flower being the largest. Blooms July to September. Drought tolerant and attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Deer resistant. Long blooming and will rebloom if cut back. Plants will stay shorter in poorer, drier soils.
Prefers full sun and average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. Prefers dry, sandy or rocky, alkaline soils. Tolerant of poor soils, drought, summer heat and humidity. Avoid wet soils in winter.
Interesting in that the blooms open from the top down.
