Erect, vase-shaped, non-branching plants have reddish or green stems topped by pyramidal golden-yellow flower panicles in late summer/early fall. Tall plants spread via rhizomes. Attracts butterflies, songbirds and other pollinators.

Prefers full sun to light shade and poor, well-drained soil. Tolerates moist soil. Cut back hard early in season to reduce flopping. Deadhead to encourage rebloom and to prevent self-sowing. Native.
