Emerald green leaves that are brightly tipped in red turn sunny yellow in poor soil and high heat. Forms medium to large rosettes. Grow in poor soil for more color. After flowering, the mother plant (hen) dies to make room for the offsets (chicks)that surround her. Deer resistant.
Grow sun to light shade in poor to moderately fertile, sharply drained soil. Useful in strawberry pots, tucked in crevices, and in rock gardens.
