Rosettes have flattish, gray-green leaves tinged with red surrounding center leaves that look like miniature cabbages. After flowering, the mother plant (hen) dies to make room for the offsets (chicks). Deer resistant.

Grow in poor to moderately fertile, sharply drained soil. Useful in strawberry pots, between stepping stones, and in rock gardens.
