Large, flattish rosettes of bright green tongue-like leaves are heavily overlaid with dark purple to black on their outer 2/3's. Very distinctive! After flowering, the mother plant (hen) dies to make room for the offsets (chicks). Deer resistant.
Grow sun to light shade in poor to moderately fertile, sharply drained soil. Useful in strawberry pots, tucked in crevices, and in rock gardens.
