Hostas are an exceptionally diverse family of woodland plants. Grown primarily for their fantatstic foliage, many also have lovely blooms, some of which are quite fragrant. They are able to tolerate a wide range of conditions, but generally prefer bright light in shaded areas. Although some hostas can take a small amount of sun, we know of no hosta that can take full sun here in central Virginia. Blue hostas maintain their color best in cool, lightly shaded situations. Some hostas will change or temporarily lose their variegation in the heat of summer.
Hostas will grow in ordinary garden soil and withstand drought and dry soils, but they are most beautiful when provided with ample moisture and organic matter. Fertilize lightly in spring for best plant development and mulch with organic matter to moderate soil temperature and moisture loss. Remove old foliage when it dies in the fall.
